Electronic Prescribing & Ordering
The Ambulatory Order Management application provides physicians and medical practice staff the ability to manage the needs of outpatients in an efficient, easy-to-use electronic format. As part of the Medical and Practice Management (MPM) Suite, Ambulatory Order Management fits seamlessly into an organization's Health Care Information System and contributes to an effectively managed private physician practice.
Components and Benefits
With Ambulatory Order Management, caregivers are able to easily order diagnostic tests, prescriptions, referrals and follow-up appointments for the patients under their care from one convenient location. Some of the key features that caregivers can take advantage of are:
- Simple medication, diagnostic procedure and referral ordering
- Drug-Drug, Drug-Allergy, and Drug-Food interaction checking
- Medical Necessity checks
- Order Sets
- Weight-based dosing
- E-Prescribing functionality
- User defined preferences for managing orders
Integration
With the unique integration with all of the MEDITECH applications, caregivers throughout the entire enterprise are able to access and update a patient’s allergies and medications, creating truely shared medication and allergy lists. For example, if a medication was prescribed to a patient in the inpatient or emergency setting, clinicians in the ambulatory setting will have real-time access to that medication, ensuring the safest environment for patient care.
Prescriptions
With Ambulatory Order Management (AOM), physicians are given a safe and efficient means to order prescriptions for patients. AOM utilizes conflict checking such as drug-drug, drug-allergy and drugfood interaction checking to ensure the safety of the patient when prescribing medications. Physicians, as well as other authorized users, are given the following options to transmit prescriptions to pharmacies:
- Telephone
- Fax (manual or electronic)
- Electronic Prescribing (with a licensure with DrFirst)
- Printing paper prescriptions
Flexibility in Administering Care
Ambulatory Order Management arms physicians with a broad range of patient information that increases their ability to provide the highest level of care and allows them to update patient records in real time with new data. Users can view and manipulate information pertaining to:
- Specific patient allergies
- Prescription histories, renewals and changes
- Authorized prescriptions from other physicians
- Prescription discontinuations
In addition, users have the ability to cancel diagnostic procedures, print orders on demand, and enter electronic signatures into the system to complete orders.
Procedures
Clinicians can quickly and conveniently order diagnostic and office procedures, follow-up appointments, referrals and durable medical equipment while providing the highest level of care for their patients. By using Ambulatory Order Management (AOM), caregivers will reap the benefits of the seamless integration with MEDITECH's Laboratory and Microbiology as well as the Imaging and Therapeutic Services applications. When diagnostic orders are placed within AOM those orders flow electronically to the corresponding MEDITECH module where the tests are resulted and electronically sent back to the physician who ordered the procedure for immediate review.
